This could also be the unintentional beginning of a project in the vain of JAB's 'home' obsession.

balde-sorry

JABN recently saw John Baldessari's solo show in SoCal, at LACMA. See here... does "SoCal" even work? I couldn't find JABN's favorite piece/series. So instead, here are some palm trees to emphasize the SoCal-ifornication of JB (not JAB). And to remind JABN blogspot readers/viewers that we don't hate LA, or Baldessari, like we've been trained to.

A slow series

By now, all five of you who read this blog must know how much I like pairs. Well, here you go: (Unfortunately, you can see the tape marks from where these have been hanging on my wall for the past couple years.)

And the picture that started it all...

Quote of the day

Our photography professor at Sarah Lawrence College, Lois Conner, told us to sleep with this quote by John Szarkowski under our pillows...

I took her pretty seriously and have lugged this same piece of paper (note the tape on the top) from New York to San Francisco to Paris and back in the past two and a half years.

The Bathers

Morning Meeting

Sarah Anne Johnson does this thing where she intertwines photographs taken while "tree planting" in Canada with photographs of dioramas she constructs based on memories (of the tree planting days). Get it? Read about it where it's more well articulated.

Larry Sultan's night with Paris

"I said I'd do it if she would go to my parents' house and let me photograph her in my childhood home in her underwear like a horny teenager," Sultan said of the photograph he took for Interview magazine.

families, fathers

It has become too trendy for photographers to take pictures of their dysfunctional families. But why not promote the trend here? I'll be more specific though-- pictures of failing father figures. And interestingly, all male photographers... daddy issues?

Doug Dubois' father, from Family Pictures, a series which includes documentation of his father's recovery from a train accident.

Richard Billingham's alcoholic father, Ray, from Ray's a Laugh

Mitch Epstein's father, from Family Business, a project documenting the decline of his father's furniture store.

Larry Sultan's father, Irving, from Pictures From Home. Think a little less 'failing' father figure, more retired father figure.
